Learn Cable Knitting: Franklin Beanie

Cables aren’t as scary as they seem! Are you an adventurous beginner who’s trying to learn a new technique or a more experienced knitter who just hasn’t been able to master cable knitting?

If you are, this class is for you!

Come knit the Franklin Beanie with instruction directly from the pattern designer! This hat features cables knit flat as well as in the round. All the cables are small and occur in a repeating pattern, which makes them perfect for first-timers.

You will learn how to create a provisional cast on, knit cables with and without a cable needle, follow charted knitting instructions, and graft your knitting. We will also review how to work German short rows and learn an unusual knitting technique: wrapped stitches.

When: October 13, 20, 27 (Tuesdays) from 1:00–2:30pm

What you will learn:

• provisional cast on
• cabling with and without a cable needle
• reading a cable chart
• kitchener stitch
• wrapped stitches

Materials:

• Franklin Beanie pattern (coupon code to download pattern for free provided upon signing up for the class)
• 1 skein (or 210-260 yards) of DK weight yarn (Suggested yarn: Roundabout DK)
• US 4 circular needles (or needles required to meet gauge), either long enough for magic loop or about 22” from tip to tip
• DPNs or long circulars of the same size to work the decreases
• Stitch marker
• Cable needle (optional - if you want to learn how to use it)

Please complete and block a gauge swatch prior to beginning the class.

Prerequisites: knit, purl, knit and purl decreases, knitting in the round (including small circumference), picking up stitches, a basic understanding of German short rows (there will be a review in this class, but not a full lesson), and familiarity with reading written knitting patterns
