PLY Magazine — Power Issue
Spinners are powerful people — we make yarn. This issue explores that power in all its forms: how to harness it, grow it, protect it, and enjoy it.
Power can mean spinning faster and more consistently. It can mean being more intentional, more mindful, or building habits that support your body and your curiosity over the long haul. It might mean learning how to move from a single 4-ounce braid to spinning larger quantities for bigger projects. This issue looks at power from many angles, and chances are at least one of them will speak directly to where you are right now.
You’ll find articles on speed, production, and efficiency — but if faster yarn-making isn’t your goal, there’s plenty here for you too. Pieces on mindfulness, learning, consistency, habit-building, spinning with chronic illness or pain, and really understanding how to use your wheel all come together to support your growth as a spinner.
There are thoughtful experiments exploring drafting, fiber preparation, yarn construction, and how those choices affect yarn longevity. There’s even a memorable showdown between yarn and a robot (yes, really). And of course, there are powerful projects designed to put all that learning into practice.
Power doesn’t look the same for every spinner. It might be quicker, finer, stronger, steadier — or simply more present. This issue is about becoming a more powerful spinner on your terms, and finding joy and confidence in the making.
